18 Months

We have officially entered my very favorite age-- 18 months. I just have a lot of excited anticipation about what the next months will hold. New words, new tricks, new developments. It is all just so much fun. The last month has been so busy. Daniel is living out at camp for the summer, and we have been traveling a ton. But, Carver and I (most days) have a very good routine and rhythm that defines our time. Some days we are busy and some days we stay in pajamas half the day. But, I love it. I never thought I would like staying at home but I can't even imagine another path for my life-- at least for right now. I'm content spending my days playing with and taking care of this precious boy that has changed my whole world. I feel like I've embraced motherhood well, but I am certainly a work in progress. I am much too impatient, and too easily frustrated. I get exhausted and grumpy and just wish wish wish I could be perfect for him. Carver doesn't always get me at my best, but he gets all of me. All my time, all of my focus and attention. I'm working on my weaknesses while acknowledging that I'll never be a perfect mom. But, hopefully I will find a way to be exactly what he needs.

18 Month Info:

Stats: 26 lbs
32 in
50% percentile

1) Words: Mama, Dada, "dog," "cat," hey, yes, "delia," bye

2) Favorites: cereal bars; the girls (delia and lea); unloading...anything; "helping" with laundry and other chores, BATHS, Toy Story, spaghetti, playing outside, vanilla milkshakes, muffins, pacifiers

Healthy, organic, vanilla milkshake.
Just kidding, it's from Arby's

** Least Favorites: Getting out of the bath tub; brushing teeth, being told "no" :)

3) Temperament: feisty; he laughs and smiles a lot but also cries and screams. He definitely has a temper and can get really mad about certain things. He is also incredibly busy-- all the time. Flying around the house, getting into everything, he rarely even pauses throughout the day. He is a beautiful mess.

4) New-ish stuff: He can identify body parts now (eyes, ears, belly), and he has learned a sign or two (as in sign language-- thanks Aunt Courtney!)

5) Carver understands about 90% of the things I tell him and/or ask him to do. Which makes it all the more frustrating when he disregards what I am saying and does whatever he wants...

6) He has developed a weird aversion to sleeping in the dark. We're on the hunt for a good nightlight.

7) Sleeping: Carver takes 1 afternoon nap that typically lasts 2-3 hours. His bedtime has been pushed back to 8 p.m. since he started getting up at 6:30 in the morning and, frankly, I can't start my day that early. Can't. So now he is back to getting up around 7:30-7:45.

8) First trip to the Emergency Room with Carver. He had an episode of Nursemaid's Elbow while we were out of town this month. I was holding his hand walking down a sidewalk-- he tripped, I "caught" him by pulling up on his arm to keep him from splatting on the concrete and....nursemaid's elbow was the result. It was traumatizing, terrifying, incredibly sad, and thankfully, easily fixed. I cried more than he did. But, he is pretty tough. Hoping to never repeat that.

My favorite things:

* When Carver pats me on the back after I pick him up or he'll give me a hug and then pat pat pat. Love it.

* Watching Carver's reaction when we read his favorite book-- he laughs and squeals on a particular page of the book and he does it every single time.

* Hugs

* Carver has a weird fascination with my eyebrows. It's odd but funny enough to be endearing.

* Belly laughs

* Seeing the sheer pride on his face when he does something good, or new, or all by himself.

* When he smiles behind his pacifier

* Watching him sleep-- the only time he is actually quiet and still.

Love those eyes.

It's amazing how much life 18 short months can hold.

Carver, your daddy and I love you so very much. We thank God every single day that he blessed us with you.

Father's Day

My dad is one of my very favorite people on earth. I respect him, admire him, depend on him, and cherish him. The word that best describes my relationship with my dad is easy. We get along so well, and always have. My dad is incredibly smart-- he knows a little bit about a whole lot of things, and he can fix or build just about anything. A trait that Daniel has also and which I greatly admire and appreciate.

My dad is also fiercely protective of us-- even now that we have all passed the 30-year-old mark. He is a safety net for me, a problem solver, a support and a comfort. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

So, Happy Father's Day (a little late), Daddy! I think the world of you and I am so incredibly blessed that you are my dad. I love you.

Summertime

Carver and I have only been home from Florida for 1 week and it has already been fairly eventful...

We have had 2 hail storms...

We've played outside a lot-- the hose is a particular favorite.

And we tried out a new toy.
Carver had his last bottle... the transition has been harder for me than for him.

Carver learned to take off his diaper. Which he proceeded to throw in his (empty) laundry basket. Then he ran around naked for awhile.

I'll be away from the blogging world for the next couple of weeks. Carver and I are leaving bright and early tomorrow morning to head to Baltimore by way of Lynchburg. We'll be partying up there and celebrating the Big Day. Check back in a couple of weeks for an abundance of blog postings documenting the wedding festivities.

a day at the zoo...

It has become a tradition of ours to go to Lowry Park Zoo every time we are in Florida. I love this tradition because I really, really, love the zoo. I think Carver is really starting to love it too.

We always start the day with breakfast at Cracker Barrel, then we spend the morning hours at the zoo and finish off the excursion with lunch at Jason's Deli.

All in all, a perfect day :)

Julia made a new friend.

He's on a mission.
Waiting to ride on the carousel...

...and we waited and waited...

Finally we were off! And Carver's mouth stayed like this for the ENTIRE ride...

Then we rode a camel.

Staying hydrated.
Starting to get sleepy...
His favorite part of the day? Definitely playing in the water.

He loved having Julia play with him in the water-- and so did I. Thanks Jules :)

Wedding Shower for Courtney!

The main reason for Carver and I heading down to Florida a couple of weeks ago was to help throw Courtney a super fun wedding shower. Well, I hope it was super fun for her.

We had the shower at The Stanford Inn in Bartow. The room was great, the food was great, the servers were great--- the owners, not so much. I won't vent here but they have a nasty letter in their future...

Here are some pictures from the super fun shower:

Courtney and Grandma Ruby

Courtney with Mickie and Aunt Ginger

Cupcakes: Key Lime and Red Velvet

The ridiculously cute "sign in" box.

Favors: Lucky Bamboo in tiny Mason jars with ribbon (teal or brown)

David Yurman! (Ginormous Blue Topaz ring from Mama and Daddy).

Carver "helping" Aunt Courtney open her presents.

Post-Shower pics at home-- I totally failed to get pictures of us at the shower.

Less than two weeks until the wedding-- I'm so very excited! Carver and I leave in 3 days to begin our (very, very) long journey to Baltimore and then the wedding festivities begin!!!!

Sweet friends, baby love, and a visit to the Alma Mater

While in Florida Carver and I had the extreme pleasure of visiting my friend Courtney and her sweet family. Courtney is one of my BFFs and we don't get to see each other often enough. I love getting to visit her but it makes me extra emotional about the fact that we don't live close enough to each other. I SO wish we lived closer and our babies could truly grow up together.

My heart simply swelled watching our kids play together. Whitney is 14 months and is petite and precious with beautiful blue eyes and huge dimples. She is the perfect mix of Courtney and Darin. Love, love, love this girl. My major concern with the visit was that Carver would either a) play too rough with Whitney and scare/hurt/traumatize her, or b) Carver would destroy their lovely home. Luckily he LOVED Whitney and was super sweet to her...unfortunately, he did break one cute ceramic lamp-type thing on their patio...

Exploring the backyard.
Pushing Whitney around on her train.

Pool time! They had a blast!

The highlight of the much-too-short visit was spending the morning wandering around UF's campus, reminiscing about our college days (we had almost all of our non-core classes together there during my last two years at UF), and eating at our favorite Gainesville restaurant, The Swamp. I simply loved being back on campus. This was my first visit back since I graduated 8 years ago. So many emotions and memories are wrapped up in that place. It is incredible to me that Court and I were walking around the campus, pushing our kids in their strollers. My my how time flies. It was a perfect, perfect morning. (With the exception of the parking ticket I received, though that brought on its own wave of nostalgia). I love college campuses-- especially this one.

I tried bribing the kids with snacks to get them in a picture together. Fail.

There is one thing I sincerely dislike about Courtney. The fact that I look like a chubby Amazon next to her...

Around Campus:

Carver fell asleep during our trek around campus. I try to tell him that he wouldn't be so tired if he did not get up at 5:45 in the morning.

Lunch at The Swamp.

Broccoli Bites = Fried yummy goodness. A tradition of ours.

I've said it before, but Courtney is one of my very best friends and we are so.much.alike. It is a little scary. She just gets me. I think we could spend weeks talking and never run out of things to say. She is 100% supportive of me, always. She will listen to my crazy rants and then tell me that she feels exactly the same way. She is a comfort and a blessing to me and I find it absolutely amazing that God so carefully orchestrated this friendship. We met in French class and clicked immediately. She is the only friend I made at UF and still talk to with any kind of regularity. I didn't learn French that year, but I gained an incredible friend. Which is well-worth the misery of French class five days a week. Courtney-- please move here. Please, please, please. There are multiple houses for sale in my neighborhood :) I need you here!!!
